Understanding the Old Testament
A Presbytery of Wabash Valley CRE Course
September 14, 2026 – October 23, 2026
This is a six-week survey course on the Old Testament, part of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley Ruling Elder program. The purpose of this course is to:
- To gain an understanding of the Old Testament, including its content, its interpretation, and the historical and cultural context in which it was produced;
- To reflect theologically upon the Old Testament to inform and undergird the ministry of the Ruling Elder;
- To help strengthen the ministries of the Ruling Elders of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley through learning and mutual support.
Enrollment is limited to Presbytery of the Wabash Valley ruling elders or others approved by PWV for enrollment.

Dr. Caitlin Hubler is Assistant Professor of Theology at Loyola University Maryland. She received her PhD in Hebrew Bible from Emory University. Dr. Hubler's work engages conceptions of divinity and its representation within the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East. Her dissertation, “Deutero-Isaiah’s Aniconic Logic: Divine Ontology in the Templeless Age,” investigates assumptions about idolatry in Deutero-Isaiah. Her writing has appeared in the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception, and the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament. Dr. Hubler previously earned a B.S. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia and an M. Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary. |
Schedule
This is an asynchronous course; participants will not be required to log on at specific times.
Program Fee
The program fee for this course is $200. All balances are due two weeks before program start. Cancellations must be received at least two weeks before program start to receive a refund of the program fee.
Additional Information
Enrollment is limited to Presbytery of Wabash Valley ruling elders or others who have made special arrangements with the Presbytery of Wabash Valley.
Participants will need to purchase a copy of The Old Testament: A Concise introduction by Brent A. Strawn (Routledge: 2019) before the start of the course.
