Theological Reflection in Older Adulthood

January 19 – February 27, 2026

Course Description

Ministry among older adults is full of opportunities to engage in theological reflection. Drawing upon Scripture, theological writings, hymns and songs of the church, denominational and other resources, course participants will learn how to facilitate this work as they explore theological doctrines and concepts that frequently concern older adults. Weekly assignments will allow for the topical exploration, reflection, and application to ministry. Weekly live group sessions will allow for discussion and group reflection and application.

During the last two weeks of the course, we will use the film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as a practical exercise in individual and group theological reflection. Viewing the film in advance of the course and other pre-course reading and reflection is required. All materials will be posted on the course site.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Articulate a theological understanding of the topics covered in the course as related to older adulthood.
  • Identify and use effective methods and a variety of resources to support theological reflection among older adults.
  • Integrate course material in a final project designed for their minstry context exploring one or more theological concepts and demonstrating effective use of methods and resources.
